Deerfield Review - October 21, 2010
Holy Cross Students participated in their annual Walk-a-thon Tuesday to raise money on behalf of their school. This year, a service component called “De-Feet Hunger” was added to the traditional Walk-a-thon format, with some students gathering food items from surrounding neighborhoods and parish families ahead of the event to donate to the West Deerfield Township Food Pantry. Eighth-grade students pulled a caravan of wagons to the pantry, delivering 100 grocery bags.

Jeffrey Johnson, a junior at Deerfield High School, was on a road trip with his dad and younger brother when a phone call came from his mom that he received a perfect score on his ACT test. Surprise and celebration followed. I felt confident after taking the test, but I didn’t think I got a 36, Johnson said.
Johnson, who plays varsity baseball and football at Deerfield High School, credits his success to several factors, including his sports training, schooling and the good night’s sleep he had ahead of the test.
Although football and baseball practices and games take a big chunk of his time, he says the sports culture helped nurture his work ethic. Sports add structure to my day, Johnson said. I don’t procrastinate nearly as much during baseball and football season, he said.
Johnson also said a high school study strategies course he took this year helped him to be prepared for the ACT test. The class allows students to practice standardized test-taking. He also credits his grade-school teachers at Holy Cross School. The teachers really care about the students at Holy Cross, he said. There are some really great teachers there, he said.
