Fruits of the Holy Spirit

To prepare for the sacraments we will be receiving this year, we are focusing on the Fruits of the Spirit to refine keep our hearts pure, and touch the lives of those around us. Our first fruit we are focusing on is self-control. We will be talking and working on ways to practice self-control in our homes, in the classroom, and out in the world.

This week, brainstorm ideas of how we already practice self-control. You can also discuss areas where more self-control can be practiced. Make sure to celebrate the moments when your child practices self-control. This might be one of the hardest fruits to cultivate, but one worthy of our time indeed!

October is Dedicated to the Rosary

October is the Month of the Holy Rosary. In second grade, this means that we are beginning to learn the basics of the Rosary, its purpose, and all the prayers said within the Rosary. We have learned the following steps:

  1. The Sign of the Cross
  2. The Apostles' Creed
  3. Our Father
  4. 3 Hail Marys
  5. The Glory Be

I am sharing this cute video on how even the youngest children can partake in the saying of the Rosary.

Growth Mindset

As a class we are working on developing positive self-image, particularly relating to the way we learn. As the teacher, I encourage asking for help vs. "I don't get it." Class Dojo fits perfectly with these strategies, and focuses on a "growth mindset." We learn and discuss the lesson twice a week in an effort to better understand how we learn, and that we can learn.

Each week I will share the lesson on our website. However, I ask that you and your child stick to our weekly lessons and do no go ahead to further lessons. They are all available on YouTube channels, and I would like to sequence them and have your child see them for the first time in our class together. Each lesson comes with discussion questions you and your family can have together. They are inspiring, little videos. The second graders always ask for more! We are taking them a chapter at a time in an effort to support their growth mindset. Below you will find lessons 1-3 with their discussion questions.

Parts of a Sentence

Our focus in grammar for the past two weeks has been subjects and predicates. This can be a tricky aspect of grammar for students. The second graders have been doing a great job identifying the subjects and predicates. We turn to good old School House Rock for a little diddy about subjects and predicates!

Parts of a Plant

In Science we are continuing to learn about the parts of a plant. Here is a video to help reinforce what we have learned so far!
