Holy Cross Grad Achieves Top ACT Score

Joseph Newhall, son of Robert and Teresa Newhall, a junior at Deerfield High School, earned a top composite score of 36 on a recent ACT test.  Nationally, while the actual number of students earning a composite score of 36 varies from year to year, less than one-tenth of one percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score.  Among test takers in the high school graduating class of 2012, only 781 of more than 1.66 million students earned a composite score of 36.

In addition to academic achievements, Joseph is a member of the Varsity track team and band programs at DHS.  He is currently working on his Eagle Scout project at Little House of Glencoe and will be traveling to Flint, Michigan on a service trip this sumer as part of the Faith Formation Program at Holy Cross Parish.

                                               Congratulation Joseph!

8th Grader Wins Library Card Design Contest!

Claire Johnson, 8th grader at Holy Cross, is the winner of the new Children’s Library card design contest!  Claire is an avid Library user who “reads, reads and reads” - which is how she got the idea for the award-winning design.    Claire’s was one of almost 80 entries.  These were pared down to six semi-finalists and we asked the community to vote for their favorite.

We're proud of you, Claire!

National Council of Teachers of English Writing Contest Winner Announced!

Entering a national writing contest is no small feat.  Being recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English for your writing is an even greater accoumplishment.  Holy Cross students have been recognized in the Promising Young Writer's Contest for three of the last four years.  This year, we are proud to announce that Katy Maksymiu, one of our 8th graders is the only Illinois recipient of this award.

                                                    Congratulations Katy!

Theme for the Year

"Do Unto Others As You Would Have them Do Unto You" Matthew 7:12

Throughout the 2011-2012 school year, all Holy Cross students learned about, reflected upon, practiced and celebrated our theme of The Golden Rule. Shortly after spring break, students began reflecting on  the many ways our theme, The Golden Rule, helped them throughout the year.  Their thoughts were expressed through an all school art project, consisting of designing individual pictures that symbolized our theme and what they felt best represented their class.

They began with a pencil sketch on on a 12x12 inch piece of paper, then colored in the shapes, foreground, middle ground and background as they imagined it to look on a 12x12 inch tile.

The finished work was athen placed on the wall for all students to view.  They were asked to select the tile designs they felt best represented The Golden Rule and their class as a whole.  In some cases, multiple designs were selected and students then articulated the parts of the favored designs that best fit their class, and voila, a new classroom design was born, using elements from several of their drawings.

The homeroom designs were then transferred onto a 12x12 inch ceramic tile and color-coded to assist the students as they painted.  In groups of three, they worked diligently to paint the details.  In some cases, older buddies assisted in the process.  Three coats of paint were applied to achieve the brilliant colors they produced.  The tiles were then fired to produce a beautiful permanent glaze.

This year, the tiles are on display in a case in the main hallway just outside the school office.  It is a testimony to our legacy of being a community of faith and achievement. We hope you enjoy their beauty for years to come!
